Mimi Wheeler grew up in an entrepreneurial family in Denmark but decided she would follow the traditional path of education and pursued a social work career. But the thought of owning her own business was always with her. The art of chocolate was with her, too, and the inspiration of chocalatiers of near and far helped Mimi grow her "sweet" business.
Mimi's advice for other women in business? "It's okay to start on a shoestring budget," said Wheeler. "Don't give up your day job until you have the means to support yourself and don't be afraid to ASK FOR HELP! We're all here to help each other."

Linda Wasielewski received her Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School, in Detroit, Michigan in 1978. Linda served for more than 15 years as the Chief Deputy Corporation Counsel for Oakland County. After relocating to Traverse City to work in a firm, she realized that she needed to go on her own to make her practice work for her and her family. "Initially I was terrified to be in a solo practice. Now, I wouldn't have it any other way," said Linda. "It has given me the flexibility to raise two kids even if it meant burning the midnight oil."
Linda's advice for other women? Keep up with your professional advancements, marketing and networking! "I have been surprised by how much effort is required to attract clients - to keep my name out there. Initially, I thought that once you get your name out there - you sit back and do the legal work. It just doesn't work that way - it is a constant effort."

Janice Wyant is the proud owner of Wyant Computer Services. Life has been a system of checks and balances for Janice. When she was a stay-at-home Mom, she managed the family while her husband managed the income. When she and her husband, Tom, decided to take a leap of faith and open Wyant Computer Services, she took care of the books, while Tom took care of the clients. The idea of balance is just common sense to Janice. "Do the work, get paid for it and pay the bills," said Janice. This balance has afforded Wyant Computer Services 40% annual growth since it began in 2003. What is Janice's advice for women about to start a new business? "GO FOR IT! Do what you love and love what you do!"

Ruth Steele Walker, like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, believes there's no place like home. That's why after 35 years in the marketing communications she "retired" and joined her husband as a partner in Due North where they were able to move back to Northern Michigan full time. Even with a global client base and very busy schedule, Ruth admits that the best part of owning their own business and coming home is the ability to have a flexible schedule. "I grew up here and I'm a firm believer that you can go home again and thatke the skills you've built and the lessons you've learned, adapt them and use that to work for your home community."
Shann Vander Leek was a powerful sales manager in the television broadcasting industry. After 16 years though, the high stress levels of being a corporate creature was losing its appeal. After thoughtful consideration, moving forward on the path of her dreams was the ONLY option. We can be the best mothers, wives, business owners or colleagues when we are feeling nurtured, fulfilled, inspired and self expressed."

Margo Lori is the proud owner of FitnessFirst For You, an in-home personal trainer service. As a young woman Margo followed convention, getting her business degree, taking on the 40 hour work week but jumped off the corporate ladder because she just wasn't having fun. She found fun in her life and paid the bills by waitressing which she loved but looking down the road, the prospect of serving tables at 60 just didn't seem practical. So, she took her passion for fitness and built her business slowly, a strategy she suggests for a debt free business launch. Margo now has fun and success on her own terms.
Margo's advice for future women business owners would be:
Define your strengths, weaknesses and your passion.
Listen to your gut instincts.
Set annual goals and break this down into measureable monthly goals.

Wedy Steele is the proud co-owner of Tape Wrangler. The saying "if you build it, they will come" holds true for Wendy and her husband Rick's successes. "Back in early 2006, we were working on a project together that involved repeated use of duct tape," said Steele. "We were having difficulty peeling it off the roll and tearing it and decided we needed a duct tape dispenser." The rest of the story is history, for when they went to buy one at the store, it didn't exist. The result? It was their invention of the Tape Wrangler 700 Heavy Duty Tape Dispenser and a family of tape dispensers under the Tape Wrangler brand.
